Beginning last June, Microsoft, the largest software company in the world hinted at its intention to launch a free antivirus service called Morro.
Microsoft spokesman told Reuters that is has conducted testing of early versions of this product among Microsoft's employees and if all goes according to plan, a trial version will be available by Microsoft on its website.
Although consumers should be happy about Microsoft's entry into antivirus market with its free service, current antivius providers such as Symantec Corp and McAfee will be very vary and looking very intently at every step that Microsoft takes in this arena.
Morro will offer the basic facilities to combat several types of malicious software such as viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. However, Janice Chaffin, Symantec's consumer division president does not see Morro as a major threat to Symantec's business. "Microsoft's free product is essentially another version of OneCare that they pulled from the market."
Threatening or not, Microsoft's free antivirus may be worth waiting.
